Lab Diamonds
Yes, lab-created diamonds will test positive on a diamond tester. Although grown in a lab rather than in the earth’s crust, lab diamonds have the same chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds.
Expert gemologists cannot distinguish between the two with the naked eye. A lab diamond can only be distinguished from mined diamonds using specialized equipment that can detect the minor differences in trace elements and crystal growth.
Lab diamonds are chemically and optically the same as mined diamonds. The only difference is its origin.
No. Moissanite is a distinct gemstone, characterized by a unique chemical makeup, appearance, and hardness. Lab-grown diamonds share the same structure and durability as mined diamonds, whereas moissanite does not.
We do not use moissanite in any of our jewelry or engagement rings.
Lab-grown diamonds are created by replicating the natural conditions of extreme heat and pressure that form diamonds in the earth, but within a controlled environment. Growth begins with a tiny fragment of an existing diamond, known as a seed, which acts as the foundation for new growth. There are two primary methods:
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): A diamond seed is placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. With the right temperature and pressure, carbon layers build on the seed, forming a diamond crystal.
HPHT (High Pressure High Intensity): Carbon is exposed to intense pressure and heat that mimics the Earth’s mantle, allowing the carbon to crystallize around the seed into a diamond. Both methods produce real diamonds with the same composition and brilliance as mined diamonds.
Type IIa diamonds are considered the most chemically pure, with exceptional optical transparency, and make up less than 2% of naturally occurring diamonds.
All of our lab-grown diamonds are Type IIa, offered in D-H color grading.

Yes. Like mined diamonds, the market value of lab-grown diamonds can fluctuate over time. Because they are a newer category, pricing trends are still evolving and may be less predictable than natural diamonds—but their beauty, durability, and authenticity remain the same.
We value your ability to choose what matters most to you. When it comes to your diamond engagement ring, we encourage you to select the diamond that makes the most sense for your budget and preferences. We will always provide exceptional quality engagement rings and stones, regardless of whether that stone is grown in a lab.
Jean Dousset exclusively uses lab-grown diamonds and lab diamond pavé throughout all engagement rings and jewelry collections.
Our engagement rings are exclusively crafted with lab diamond center stones selected from our digital diamond feed. Our engagement ring and jewelry designs exclusively feature colorless, VS+ clarity lab-grown accent diamonds and pavé (depending on style) to ensure the best quality and brilliance. The only natural stones we may use in our designs are gemstones featured in our Signature Stone® if a lab diamond is not selected.
Our diamond specialists carefully curate each diamond in our feed, selecting only the finest stones for their beauty, cut quality, and overall “make.” This ensures you see the very best options available across every shape, color, clarity, and carat weight. When exploring made-to-order engagement rings on our site, you’ll be able to choose from this exclusive selection to personalize your design and view its final price.

The cut refers to how a diamond interacts with light. Jean Dousset exclusively works with expert diamond cutters to identify diamonds with the best cut
Color evaluation is based on the absence of color in white diamonds. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the higher its grade and value.
Clarity measures the presence of internal or external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes. Our diamond feed exclusively offers GIA-graded diamonds with VS+ clarity.
Carat measures the weight of a diamond, not its size. This is why some cut shapes may appear larger than others, even with the same or smaller carat weight.
Just like a mined diamond, lab diamond rings can be insured. We recommend purchasing a separate jewelry insurance policy through your provider of choice. If you’re looking for added protection, learn more about what’s covered in our Dousset Protection Plan.
