For decades, global diamond grading was defined by a single authority: The GIA (Gemological Institute of America). As grading frameworks for laboratory-grown diamonds evolve, we have chosen to establish and stand behind our own certification standard.
The Era of a Universal Standard
For over half a century, the global diamond industry relied on the framework established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
The 4Cs (color, clarity, cut, and carat weight) became the universal language of value. This structure created consistency, comparability, and trust.
For natural diamonds, it defined what “Excellent” meant.
That system shaped modern diamond evaluation.
A Changing Framework
For many years, laboratory-grown diamonds were graded using the same full D–Z color scale and Flawless–Included clarity scale applied to natural stones.
More recently, GIA introduced a simplified descriptive framework for laboratory-grown diamonds, reducing reliance on the full D–Z and IF–I3 scales traditionally used for natural diamonds.
Under this updated approach, qualifying laboratory-grown diamonds are grouped within two broader classifications: “Premium” and “Standard.”
This evolution reflects production realities: laboratory-grown diamonds tend to cluster within narrow quality ranges.
As grading systems adapt to that environment, interpretation changes.
We chose to respond with clarity.
Why We Established the JD Certificate
In the laboratory-grown era, we believe accountability should match precision.
Rather than rely on evolving external frameworks, we implemented our own certification standard applied consistently across every Jean Dousset laboratory-grown diamond.
The JD Certificate is not an overlay.
It is the official grading document accompanying each diamond we sell.
We assume full responsibility for its evaluation.
A diamond must meet our measurable standards before it receives a JD Certificate. If our name is attached, our grading stands behind it.
Accountability, Not Abstraction
The JD Certificate reflects direct responsibility.
There is no ambiguity about authorship.
There is no delegation of evaluation.
We define the parameters.
We apply the grading.
We stand behind the result.
In a category where production precision has increased, selection discipline must increase as well.
A Modern Mark of Authentication
The JD Certificate reflects contemporary diamond reality.
Its faceted, holographic-inspired seal replaces the traditional embossed stamp — a signal of technological precision and traceable authorship.
Each certificate is digitally archived and permanently associated with its diamond.
It is not symbolic.
It is a formal declaration of evaluation.
Defined Parameters. Defined Accountability
Every JD diamond is graded according to strict internal protocols rooted in the traditional 4C system. In addition, we apply narrower proportion tolerances than broad commercial categories by examining crown and pavilion angles, table and depth ratios, symmetry precision, light return and scintillation.
Assessed within defined ranges.
Evaluated under magnification and visual inspection.
Analyzed through proportion metrics and optical performance review.
Weight is measured precisely.
Our Standard. Our Responsibility.
When we issue a JD Certificate, we are certifying that the diamond meets the grading criteria we publicly define and internally enforce.
We do not outsource that judgment.
We accept accountability for its accuracy.
Confidence is strongest when responsibility is clear.
Choose With Defined Standards
A diamond is not defined by category alone. It is defined by how it is measured, evaluated, and stood behind. The JD Certificate reflects the standard we are willing to attach our name to without delegation.
FAQS
Because grading frameworks for laboratory-grown diamonds have evolved. We chose to implement a defined, consistent standard and stand fully behind our evaluation.
Yes. Our grading is rooted in the traditional 4C structure, with defined internal tolerances and additional proportion analysis.
Each diamond is evaluated using gemological examination tools, proportion measurement, and optical performance review. The certificate reflects the standards we publicly define and stand behind.
Yes. Each JD Certificate is digitally archived and traceable.
