A Tribute to Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter

At Jean Dousset, we take pride in our role as the jeweler for confident, empowered women: she who embraces traditions of exquisite craftsmanship, impeccable taste, and the highest standard of service yet is unafraid to free herself from archaic conventions that fail to serve modern desires. Fitting this description flawlessly is Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, for whom our founder Jean Dousset recently had the honor of designing a custom diamond ring.

A tribute to the multihyphenate queen’s latest album, Cowboy Carter, the one-of-a-kind design is handcrafted with a 3.94-carat lab diamond embodying the angular visage of a horse. Saddling the brilliant white diamond head are two open rings lined with luxurious pavé, reflecting the loops of the bridle, which flow into a twist beneath the gallery, shoulder, and shank. Together, these elements form a high-polish 18K gold “harness” that links at the base of the shank.

The horse motif has manifested in Beyoncé’s visual oeuvre for decades, from the holographic horse appearing on the cover of her 2022 album, Renaissance, to the various equine the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer has straddled for editorials a lá Harper’s Bazaar and Essence. Though the ever-elusive artist has left her fans to speculate the exact reason she’s drawn to the powerful animal (Is it her southern heritage and livestock-and-rodeos upbringing? Its symbolism? Both?), that attraction has never been clearer.

On the cover of Cowboy Carter—the sonic reclamation of the Black community’s unsung hand in Southern culture and American roots music—she is horseback yet again. So what better way to pay homage to the Houston, Texas, native’s motif of choice than with immaculately cut designer lab diamonds? Just as Beyonce would not have been able to make history—that is, as the first Black woman in country music history to top numerous Billboard charts—if she limited herself to boundaries established by exclusionary naysayers, Jean Dousset would not have been able to innovate in the luxury jewelry space if we listened to “traditionalists” who dismiss the future of diamonds.

By pioneering the lab diamond revolution and exclusively designing jewelry handcrafted with the world’s top 1% of lab diamonds, JD has been more empowered than ever to express his creativity as a designer. Designer diamond jewelry no longer has to be confined to the technical limitations of mined diamonds. Because high-quality lab diamonds allow for unmatched precision during the cutting process, each and every intricate detail of Beyoncé’s horse-shaped lab diamond, like the delicate ears and scintillating muzzle, are captivatingly precise.

Cowboy Carter will be remembered in history as not only one of history’s most iconic country albums of all time but also as a symbol of freedom—for both the music star and the multitudes of everyday women who have refused to compromise on their desires, instead choosing to push boundaries in the face of traditional gatekeepers. In all ways, the custom lab diamond ring Jean designed for Beyoncé mirrors this ethos of independence and liberation. So here’s to connecting with our inner Cowboy Carter: breaking conventions, one lab diamond masterpiece at a time.
